Seems as though the Spanish and the Italians have figured out how
to get their large ATOS gliders to Florida. We've got ten pilots from five
countries signed up, so it will be a real World Championship without the

John Simon lost out betting on Tuesday and giving up Wednesday.
Turned out to be the best day of the new year. We saw the HRRR forecast on
XCSkies for light winds and good lift with a reasonable cloud base around
3,000'.
It looked good, right from the get go with the skies filling up with cumulus

We noted for years now that upper level clouds can play havoc with
a soaring forecast. Yesterday the forecast was for good lift and a cumulus cloud
base between 4000' and 5000'. But at about 12:30 a deck of high clouds came over
casting shadows and lasting until about 2:00 PM. It was clear after that with a

The winds were out of the east at Wilotree Park as we launched
around 2 PM. I was first to launch but had a weaklink come untied at 15'. No
damage to me or the glider so now I was last to launch after Mick Howard and
John Simon.
The cu's had disappeared around noon so there was obviously an inversion which

We start off a spectacular week at Wilotree Park, Groveland,
Florida
A little after 2 PM Bobby Bailey tows me to 1,700' AGL (we're at
125' MSL) where I spot a bit of light lift, which doesn't work out when I turn
around into where I felt it.  I head back to the south side of the field

Christine at the FAI. The Groveland High School band will play the anthem at the
new pavilion in Groveland (which is supposed to be finished two weeks before the
