Bora at Lijak, Slovenia
Davide F.C. writes:
I have written some guidelines to help pilots to recognize and
understand how to manage a flight from Lijak (Slovenia) when the main wind
around the area is the Bora wind, from north east. I wrote this because there
are a lot of pilots that comes to fly here from all over Europe and very often
they don't know the peculiarities of this ridge, especially when strong winds
blow from north.
Everybody enjoys the flight at Lijak and who is used to go for cross country is
attracted by the ridges of Kovk and Nanos on the east side, the first one is
only 7 km far away, but with bora blowing, in a moment you pass from paradise to
hell if you start the glide. Two days ago, for example, two Czech PPG pilots
came back from a glide attempt to Kovk, luckily safe, but pallid in face for the
turbulence. One of them broke the right rope of his brake. Ok, maybe the PPG was
not new, I don't know, but we were all astonished.
Two years ago also many pilots racing the Aeros Winter Race were really scared
of the turbulence when they went east starting the task from Lijak, because in
Vipava valley where on Kovk there is the main take off of the competition, it
was blowing a strong Bora and was impossible to fly.
So, it is better to know where and when is possible to go.
