100 km to Williston
http://www.livetrack24.com/live_show_track.php?trackID=225172&2d=1
I'm live tracking with the LiveTracker24. Today we (Larry Bunner, Greg Dinauer,
and I) took a little flight to the north north west with a goal at Williston,
100 km away from Quest Air. The idea was to do a short flight and then be ready
for tomorrow. As tomorrow looks like a very windy day right up the east coast.
The winds were actually forecasted to be east north of us but southeast here at
Quest Air. So while it would have been possible to go to Georgia, there was no
good reason to do so.
The cu's started very early in the morning. Cloud base was 1,700' at 10 AM. Our
plan was to start at noon. We got off a little later than that.
I had Mark Frutiger take me south east upwind under a cloud. I got off at 2,600'
still not to the upwind edge of the cloud, but plenty high enough to make it
there with plenty of altitude. It was working right at the southeastern edge as
expected.
Greg had been towed to the south southwest and was struggling while I was
struggling to stay out of the clouds at 4,200'. Larry was pulled up right after
me and was working his way up as Greg and I headed north to the first cloud
north of Groveland.
Larry came in under us but that cu was pretty weak so I headed northwest to
Mascote and to some better looking clouds. I found a new dark one and found 700 fpm
to 4,200'. The sky was full of cu's. It looked like a day to go as far as we
wanted to. The wind was 8 - 10 mph out of the southeast.
No problem getting up but we got low over the Villages. Thank goodness for golf
courses as we headed out into the Villages. Larry made it to the good looking cloud
that pulled us out of the golf courses and to 5,000'.
We headed northwest to get to the west side of the Ocala airspace. Larry was
behind after we took a very scary thermal and came in below me south of the air
field.
I left Larry as Greg behind me said he was in better lift. Turned out not to be
true and Larry found 1000 fpm. I worked the weak lift and got high enough to get
high above the Ocala airspace as I nicked it on the southwest corner (but was high
above it).
It was an easy route the rest of the way to Williston, just connecting dots and
finding plenty of strong lift.
We are getting ready for Thursday.
