Competition flying in south Georgia
As we learned a couple of years ago when the Flytec Race and Rally
came through Americus a few years ago, and learned again this year with the
Flytec Americus Cup and the Flytec Race of Champions, the flying in south
Georgia is great. And it is something that is just not known in the hang gliding
community because there is no towing operation there (except
for sailplanes). Aerotowing grew up in Florida, not in south Georgia, which
does not have the great all year round weather that Florida for the most part
has. We had a spectacular time flying from Americus this year with only a couple of
days of less then fantastic weather. There are plenty of wind open places for
landing, if that becomes necessary and the corn in low in May. It can handle
high winds. There are often cu's. You can fly in any direction. It is quite
beautiful. The airport could not be more welcoming and the town is very friendly. They
seemed to enjoy us and many came out for tandem flights. This allowed the
aerotow to earn a decent living. I particularly enjoyed the mellow flying conditions. The lift was substantial.
You didn't have to bundle up to stay comfortably warm. The thermal were firm and
rarely with edges. There were situations where there was a lot more lift in a
given area than you would normally expect, even if it was weak at times. I was able to get up often from quite low and twice was saved from very low by
circling birds. There seem to be more here than at other locations. There is
plenty of habitat for them locally. I look forward to the possibility of holding a world championship here. There
have been plenty of sailplane nationals and regionals in this area. South Georgia is a beautiful, inviting, open, wonderful place for hang gliding
which I can assure you you will be missing some great flying if you don't take
the opportunity to come next year from the 2014 Americus Cup.
