Balkan Hang Gliding Open meet at Koniavo, Bulgaria started with
poor weather. The first day was eventful with a very short task and a successful
deployment of a reserve parachute by the Russian pilot Andrei Sheliavin. He
reported brutal turbulence in strong wind which caused his Combat glider to
tuck.

After successfully opening the canopy 150 meters over the mountain top the
glider first and then the pilot landed in the forest. The Combat is totally
destroyed and the pilot came away with no scratches. He was helped by the locals
who arrived quickly with a chainsaw after witnessing the opening of the canopy.
The pilot is in good humor after the incident.

The weather in this area tends to quickly build thunderstorms.
