Save the Point of the Mountain

It's been a while since our last SSM update, and a lot has been in
the works the past couple of months. This past week we received some great news
that I wanted to share with everyone now that we've been given approval to do so
by Salt Lake County. About two months ago, the County commissioned a wind study to help better
understand the affects that further mining operations would have on our ability
to fly the point. Three models were created using data supplied from Geneva and
their 100 year plan maps. The first scenario being the Point as it exists today,
the second with the 43 acres of the back ridge removed, and the third with the
western diamond of the flight park (40 acres) removed instead of the back ridge.
These scenarios were chosen because up until recently, the county felt like the
trading of the western portion of the flight park in exchange for the back ridge
was their only option. The study was recently completed, and both scenarios came
back showing dramatic negative results, both of them greatly impacting our
ability to fly. The results have been presented to the Mayor's office as well as Geneva, and in
a recent meeting, Geneva has conceded to investigating other options. Over the
next month, three more models for the wind study will be created and tested,
including one scenario where only land behind the back ridge is excavated and we
are cautiously optimistic that this will be the only scenario that will produce
positive results for flying. The biggest news, however, is that the County Mayor's office is now getting
involved, and while the Mayor is committed to representing all parties and
aspects involved in this situation, he has said that he wants to make sure that
the recreation and open space aspects of the Point and the flight park are
protected. In a recent meeting between Geneva and the County, Geneva expressed
for the first time, their willingness not only to sell the land on the face of
the back ridge, but to do so at agricultural rates (vs. Corporate / mineral
rights rates). This is HUGE for us, and finally gives us an open door to peruse a land purchase
option, for a price tag that might realistically be within reach. The county has
said that they will work to have the land value assessed / appraised sometime
over the next month, enabling our group of political consultants to take an
actual number to Capitol Hill at the opening of the legislative season in
December, as well as the ability to look at private funding options. We know progress has been slow, but for the first time in months, it appears
that there may be a light at the end of the tunnel! Thank you all for your
support.
