Filippo leading out?
I wrote earlier: "Filippo was charging ahead on his Wills Wing T2C with the extra winglets. He
had a great glide and he, Jonny and I came into the first thermal twelve
kilometers outside the start cylinder at about the same altitude." "Filippo continued to out race us all." Jonny stated to me that Filippo was following and that he, Jonny, was leading.
He didn't specify if this was true at all times or only at specific times. Now Filippo is flying a red Wills Wing T2C with a clear top surface so it is red
whether you are above or below him. He is very easy to spot as he is flying the
only two sided red glider in the competition. Perhaps Jonny was sensitive to
this issue because Filippo was flying a Wills Wing glider. I was just reporting
on what I saw and experienced, but we have track logs to determine what was the
objective truth, not just what I saw. Let's look. I wrote: "I wasnt in a great spot for the 2 PM start window so worked to get higher and
further south for the 2:20 start and hooked up with Filippo and Jonny as well as
a dozen other pilots. I was able to get much higher than the others and took the
second clock at 8,600, 1000 over Filippo and 500 over Jonny." Let's see what was happening then: I'm the red line. Filippo is the green line and Jonny the blue. At 14:21:07 I'm
at 8,635'. Jonny is at 7,674' and Filippo is at 7,447', 1,200' below me. We are
going on glide. Jonny is half a kilometer ahead of Filippo and two thirds of a
kilometer in front of me. We glide for twelve kilometers. I get 10:1 averaging
41 mph over the ground in a six mph cross wind, Filippo 13.6:1 at 42 mph and
Jonny 13.1:1 at 38 mph to the next thermal. Filippo gets ahead of Jonny at one minute into the eleven minute glide. I pass
Jonny just over him at nine minutes into the glide. Filippo finds the lift first
at 14:32:24 I join him ten seconds later 38 feet below him. Jonny joins us ten
seconds later 100 feet below us. We leave that thermal at 14:39:31 with me on top at 6523' with Filippo at 6456'
and Jonny at 6504'. Jonny goes first with Filippo a tenth of a kilometer behind
him. We do a 6.6 kilometer glide to the next thermal. I get 8.8:1 at 45 mph in a 10
mph cross wind. Filippo gets 10.3:1 and Jonny 9.2:1. Jonny finds the next thermal at 14:45:07 leading all the way. He is at 4207'.
Filippo joins him at 14:45:42 twenty feet above Jonny. I'm turning in another
thermal one kilometer north (back) of them. I join them at 14:46:32 at 4495'. Filippo is on top at 4615' and Jonny is at
4527'. We climb in the thermal until 14:56:01 with Jonny leaving first at 6794'.
Filippo leaves with him with 6805' and I leave at 14:56:16 with 6.713'. Jonny is
again a tenth of a kilometer ahead. It is about a seven kilometer glide to the next thermal. I get 11.2:1 with a 10
mph straight cross wind at 43 mph. Filippo gets 12.8:1 at 45 mph and Jonny
11.9:1 at 46 mph. Jonny and Filippo find the next thermals simultaneously at slightly different
locations. Filippo is at 5197', Jonny at 4896' and I'm lower at 4400' four
tenth's of a kilometer behind Filippo. I can see Filippo 600' above me. I join them in the thermal (it's widely spread) and climb at 500 fpm. Filippo at
400 fpm and Jonny at 420 fpm. Jonny leaves with 7632' at 15:08:15. I'm at 7467'.
Filippo stays in the thermal and climbs to 8073'. I'm below him at 7681' when we
leave at 15:08:55. Jonny is half a kilometer ahead of Filippo. I haven't been noticing Jonny all along but it has been easy to spot Filippo in
his red glider. He is now quite a ways above me and I'm not picking out Jonny
out in front lower than me. Jonny finds the next thermal first at 15:17:01 at 3728'. Filippo comes in over
him at 15:17:31 600' higher at 4412'. I'm 1.7 kilometers behind at 4832'. I join
them at 15:19:26 at 4232'. Jonny is at 4297' and Filippo a thousand feet higher
and very visible at 5,272'. On the glide to the thermal I got 11.7:1 at 42 mph in a 14 mph cross wind,
Filippo got 9.5:1 at 46 and Jonny 8.4:1 at 45. I climbed at a rate of 380 fpm in
the thermal, Filippo at 295 fpm and Jonny at 320 fpm. We left the thermal
together at 15:22:52 with Filippo at 6110', me at 5610' and Jonny at 5585'.
Jonny was very slightly ahead of me and Filippo was a short distance behind. This is where we came apart as Filippo found a thermal behind us. I lead out
after the next thermal getting lower than Jonny. Filippo was 4,000' over us and
behind. I lost track of Jonny and Filippo for a while. What I wrote was based
upon what I had seen to that point. Fillppo got ahead of both of us and made the turnpoint before we did. I was
ahead of Jonny but lower coming into the turnpoint at Grenfell. Jonny joined
Filippo in the next thermal passed the turnpoint but Filippo was a thousand feet
over him. Jonny was slightly ahead when they headed out. Filippo was a kilometer ahead of Jonny leaving the next thermal. Their paths
diverged at this point and Filippo stopped for lift 2000' higher than Jonny.
Jonny was 2,000' lower and four kilometers ahead heading to the second
turnpoint. Jonny and I passed Filippo just before the second turnpoint. I was 1,400' over
Filippo and don't notice him. Jonny was 800' below me and slightly ahead. I went
out in front as Jonny climbed behind me. Eight kilometers before the third turnpoint at Canowindri, I started climbing
and Jonny caught up to me, 1,200' over my head. Filippo was 3,000' higher than
me and eight kilometers behind us. At 16:49:49, I topped out at 7960' Filippo was right below me and I spotted him
at 6685' and we were six kilometers from the turnpoint that Jonny has just made
at 7284'. Past the turnpoint Filippo was behind us but I'm low in weak lift. Jonny and
Filippo found better lift and got higher. Jonny made it to goal on a glide from
his height. Filippo and I worked 200+ fpm next to each other with him 400'
higher. He flew at 67 mph into goal with a thirteen mph quartering tail wind, I
averaged 57 mph. He got to goal a little over two minutes before I did. Jonny is quite correct and my perception was skewed by the fact that Filippo was
much easier to spot and higher than Jonny. Jonny lead out most of the time (but
not always). The KML version of the files (which can be converted/saved to IGC format with
GPSDump) are available here:
