Sunny?
The local NPR station kept saying that it was sunny, when it
clearly wasn't.
On Monday and Tuesday we had two enjoyable days here at Quest Air
with dozens of pilots and lots of flying in very light winds. Both days were
forecast to be sunny but Monday had high clouds like this all day: The sun was filtered all day and while there were lots of flights they mostly
lasted less sometimes much less than forty minutes. But the meteorologist
on WMFE kept saying it was sunny. Maybe they mean that there weren't any lower
level clouds. On Tuesday there were no clouds other than a few very high wispy ones, and much
better flying conditions. There was a strong inversion above 3,000' which was
quite visible and the lift was weak, but with no wind there was very little
turbulence. I pinned off at 900' AGL in what appeared to be 200 fpm. It was lighter than
that but it wasn't long before I climbed out to 3,000'. Zac was in the air
with four students but he wasn't able to teach them much given the light
conditions. I personally love light conditions, like early in the morning at Zapata. I found
it easy to stay up and get back up from low. Love having light winds.
