What's the point of hang gliding competitions?
Basically we like to have a good reason to get together with a lot
of our
hang gliding buddies (many from around the world) and fly cross country to a goal. Only one pilot will win the competition, and, of course, it is important that
there be a winner. The pilots are doing their best to fly well, but other pilots
will likely fly more proficiently. Competition gives the flying meaning, in addition to its intrinsic meaning. It gives pilots
more reason to keep going
when it gets difficult, more reason to go flying when the day looks less than
optimal. Competition gets us out in the country over new territory focused on finding the
invisible lift. The competition is not for the winner, but for the participants. The competition is for the top pilots to encourage them to make the effort to
win. The competition is for the winner, as there is only one. Competition is for everyone to lift their game. Competition is great fun and is the whole reason I'm flying hang gliders.
