Dinosaur 25th anniversary (1990, biggest, by far, ever in US, 120
pilots, 1st ever 100 mile task and 30 at goal; August 30-September 6, 2015
(post monsoon, less chance OD). (Labor day weekend)
Goal: Provide the hang gliding community with the best (ever) possible hang
gliding contest - while accomplishing the following core ideals:
1. Good value for the money;
2. Consistency in rule enforcement;
3. Fun environment and experience through peripheral activities (such as driver
contests, etc.);
4. Safe as reasonably possible
5. Top level competition on less expensive gliders;
$10K 1st prize money to be escrowed before any deposits/entry fees are
accepted;
Negotiating and likely that a longtime friend of hang gliding may match for
Sports class; sport and open class, but both classes restricted to production
king-posted gliders;
Foot launch or aerotow (to same msl altitude as foot launch) at pilots options
(runway and foot launches are within same 10K start circle);
Town of Dinosaur and landowners on board including restoring old dirt runway for
aerotowing;
Discounts at the full service RV Park, free tent camp on grass in town park or
on top;
Rocky Mountain Glider Co., LLC (Terry and Chris Reynolds) - Meet Organizers;
Target 150 pilots, reserve 75 slots for Open, 75 for Sports until May then first
come first served;
March - early registration; escrow $10K 1st prize money (other placing );
Date to be set by which king posted gliders must be certified and available (to
give everyone a chance to have the latest and preclude factory favored pilots
showing up with a ringer);
- G.W. Meadows - Meet Director and Consulting;
- Safety Director, TBD;
- Score Keeper, TBD;
- Launch Directors, top and tow, TBD;
- Driver Competition Director, TBD;
Volunteers already on board - Rick Jacob, Jim Yocum (prior to contest);
Ambulance(s) on site(s);
Port-o-potties;
Meet Headquarters Fire Dept
Cash prize driver contest such as held in 1990
Local rules will require pilots drop 1 (Open) or 2 (Sport) day low scores:
Will allow serious pilots to take more strategic risks; most important to me,
allows pilot uncomfortable with conditions to pack it in without being out of
the meet; Will allow less serious pilots to take a day off; Will allow serious
pilot with minor injury to heal; Will introduce a new element to competition,
etc.
Workers at the AT&T tower on Blue Mountain installing LTE 4G. Said Verizon would
probably follow suit.
Pre-comp Big Air seminar for unfamiliar pilots;
Encourage pilots to get some Western big air exposure at Colorado Flyin this
year end August at Villa Grove; Dinosaur between now and contest; I will meet
them or at least provide tips. Launch (8130') to snake pit (10,000/2165 = 4.6
to 1); 14,000 to Corrals, 2330' vert. = 6 to 1
Terry is going for USHPA and CIVL sanctioning in the Fall.
Entry fees in line with current fees charged at most USHPA hang gliding
competitions.
Who can fly in Sport Class has yet to be determined but will be more restrictive
than USHPA and CIVL qualifications, especially if there is significant prize
money in the Sport Class.
