Free flying in Annecy
It is against the rules to have free flyers flying on any section
of the course
When you run a World Championship you don't want free flyers
interfering with the launch, gaggling up with competitors in the start circle or
flying on the course, deliberately or inadvertently showing competition pilots
where the lift is. From the CIVL Sporting Code:
8. 4.1 Free Flyers Free flyers and personnel associated with teams must not be permitted to fly the
tasks or sections of it; it is particularly important that they do not approach
goal fields.
At the Worlds in Forbes Steve Moyes was incorrectly thought to
have been providing help to Australian pilots when in fact he was flying behind
them, but still he was flying on the course, which is not allowed. This caused a
lot of headaches for me as the meet director. At the Worlds in Big Spring one day I flew near the course (with permission from
the CIVL steward) far in advance of the competitors, but landed a few miles
passed the goal before they arrived, and even that caused a kerfuffle, although
no one thought I was aiding any one. It is normally the case that you can send up some wind dummies before the launch
of the competitors, they can not fly on the course and often they are required
to land before the task begins. I don't remember any free flyers at the Worlds
in Laragne. There seem to be a lot of free flyers flying in Annecy including paraglider
pilots. I have received a confirmed report that there has been one particular
free flyer that has been flying every day at Annecy This free flyer is related
to one of the women pilots. This has raised questions among the women pilots
regarding whether there is any help being provided by this free flyer. If it is true that this particular free flyer is flying at Annecy every day,
this is something that would have caused a huge kerfuffle at other World
Championships. What is going on with it at Annecy? If he is just flying around
and having a good time in the air, good for him. I would suggest not flying on
the course at all though.
