Once up over the flats, it was a fast shot to Mansfield, now with
a tailwind. The shot above shows the smoke band that was in front of us on the
way to Coulee City, from the same fire that caused problems yesterday. Into the
smoke we plunged, with several pilots voicing their concern, while other pilots
voiced their lack of it. The shot below was taken when I was right in the middle
of the smoke band. Although it looks like poor visibility, the ground is visible
straight below, and if another glider was in the smoke in front of me, he would
be visible from at least a mile away. It was fun to look for the domes in the
top of the smoke layer, as they indicated thermals punching through. I flew for
several kilometers this way, lifting from one dome to another.
