http://soaringspot.com/scfr14/ Mike Bilyk wins the day: The task: East wind supposed to decreased during the later afternoon (and it does). I get knocked off tow low but after getting down to 700' AGL climb out slowly to
6,500'. Unfortunately the start window doesn't open for another fifteen minutes
and lift is sparse after that. I don't get back up into a reasonable position
until the second clock and then a bunch of us take off (and many will catch the
first clock guys) again at about 6,500' (5,000' AGL). There are no cu's as we head south east to the Sunland intersection south of
Arizona City. The lift averages 300 fpm and we climb up to a little over 6,000'.
Not great altitudes but enough to get us looking for more lift when it slows
down. I grab the turnpoint, then head north with Glen Volk to find 200 fpm to 5,000'
south of the hills. I dive into them but the lift is weak and I'm falling off
the back side on the east just looking for lift or a nice landing area in the
flats. I find 200 fpm at about 400' AGL and Mitch, who was ridge soaring the
tops of the hills, joins me and we climb out of this particular hole. We take the turnpoint at the intersection of the two freeways then back to the
hills for the lift we were in. Not much there so with a half dozen other pilots
head west to find 400 fpm, which is a nice change. It stops at 6,400' for me and
the others are a few hundred feet higher as we head the next 18 km to the
western turnpoint at I8 and Stan. The lift isn't there and no one of the five guys in front of me finds anything
until we get around the turnpoint and get low gliding to goal. I don't find the
lift at my lower altitude but the rest of them get weak lift and make it in as I
land 5 KM short.
