South southwest wind at Quest Air
Larry Bunner and I took off together to the north northwest to fly
downwind under beautiful cu's. http://www.onlinecontest.org/olc-2.0/para/flightinfo.html?flightId=-408716091 http://www.xcontest.org/world/en/flights/detail:davisstraub/4.3.2015/18:04 http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/1108174 Tracks: https://airtribune.com/davisstraub/tracks__2041/live http://tinyurl.com/davisspot It's a leisurely flight to the north northwest to get around the Ocala National
forest and Leesburg airspace. I headed further west than Larry after we got up
together south of the turnpike and he got jammed into a more easterly course
which made for difficult extraction as the wind was pushing him toward Leesburg. Low at the Okahumpka Service Plaza, I worked 65 fpm until I finally found 230
fpm while Larry was struggling off to my east four kilometers. Getting back to
3,600' it was smooth going with good lift up past Wildwood, to cloudbase at
4,600' You could go right to the base without worries about being sucked in as
the lift petered out near the top. After another strong thermal with Larry struggling again low over the Villages,
I moved 10 kilometers ahead of him and just leisurely went toward the next cu's.
Having grown already accustomed to the good lift I didn't work hard enough for
100 fpm pushing on for better looking cu's which turned out not to provide what
they promised. Nice landing next to a friendly neighbor east of Bellevue and the
retrieve was right there in Patrick Halfhill's new truck. Larry got back up and kept going from behind getting to just north northwest of
Citra, about 65 miles. The day ended quickly at about 5:30 PM. It is early March
after all.
Looked like this again on Wednesday (photo by Pat O'Mara on Monday).
