North with 15 mph winds
Larry Bunner and I took off in south winds (196 degrees) that we
recorded at 20 mph as we circled above Quest Air and drifted to the north
northeast. Our goal was to go north up highway 301, and to get around the Ocala
National Forest and the air space at Leesburg you have to fly north northwest at
first. This meant jumping cloud streets one after another.
The cloud streets were well defined and at first the lift was averaging over 200
fpm. I found myself just over Larry from the start so I was leading out as I
would get to the wispies first and have to go to the next cloud. Pushing further
west just south of the turnpike and 27 km from Quest I had to work 100 fpm as I
was down to 2,000'. Larry behind me and to the east found 400-500 fpm and got
higher much quicker.
The lift was weak for me but strong for Larry for the next few thermals as we
both worked to get northwest to Wildwood to have a straight shot up highway 301
to Keystone Heights. I had to head to the east to get under a good cloud and
found 300 fpm. With the wind at 13 mph 30 degrees west of south that would drive
me closer to the National forest and I had to work my way back.
South of Bellevue we saw that a large shelf of contiguous cumulus development
was coming our way from the west and shading a large area around Ocala. Our nice
streeted sky was about to be swallowed up by darkness.
I flew over the last well lit huge field and got up under the last free standing
cu as I watched the shade coming my way. The edge of the approaching clouds and
the shade combined for a turbulent interface, perhaps convergence, which made
for unpleasant conditions. With the prospects of going much further north
diminishing, I decided to head west over the shade and over to possible landing
areas.
Larry was about 5 kilometers ahead and to my east over the forest. No landing
areas there but he was at 4,900' which is the altitude you need in this section
of the course, to be able to reach appropriate landing areas. There are also no
landing areas to the west (upwind) of the forest for at least a couple of
kilometers.
Coming in east of Ocala I was low and not finding anything over the shade. I
found a small field with storage units on the north side. These are low building
perfect for diving over and into a field. So I did. Tall weeds, but not too bad
a field to get out of.
Larry was able to stay east in the convergence area despite it being a bit rough
and made it once again to just past Citra. He landed in the field next to the
one he landed in two days ago.
