We just keep going cross country at Quest Air
Larry Bunner is here so that gives me a reason to fly. Flying
together is a lot more fun (that's why we have competitions). Larry wanted to
fly to Wallaby Ranch and back and with a west wind (a little north of west at 10
mph, I was game. The lift forecast looked good. Larry was pulled up before I was but I was soon under him and we climbed out to
cloud base at 3,700'. Heading south in a cu filled sky we had no problem finding
lift, but cloud base was less than 4,000'. The lift was less than 200 fpm. The sailplane Senior Nationals is on at Seminole Lake so there were lots of
gliders in the air. I found two turning well east of their field and got the
jump on Larry as I had to leave as I got to cloud base. Headed south southeast
to highway 474 and some east moving clouds, but had to work broken weak lift at
1,800, for quite a while before with Larry's help behind me I got into 200 fpm.
Climbing to 3,900' we were not that far west of highway 27. Getting to Wallaby from there was relatively easy but the lift was still less
than 200 fpm. Larry came back under me to get better lift just north of Wallaby
and then I headed out in front at 3,900' to get the turnpoint and head upwind
toward Mike Barber high and a rigid wing pilot low. Getting out in front under Mikey did me no good and I had to scoot back under
Larry to get some 250 fpm lift. Pushing into the headwind over the roadless
areas northwest of Wallaby was a challenge and lower than Larry now I found 170
fpm but only to 3300'. I took a risk and headed for a cloud street to the northwest. There was nothing
there. Larry, much higher than I, also went for the street and got down to
1,000' before finding weak lift. I found a pleasant pasture to land in and the
cowboy nearby was kind enough to open the gate later. Larry slowly climbed up as he was pushed east toward highway 27. Ever so slowly
he moved his way north still far east and downwind of Quest Air. After 5 PM he was at 2,800' 13 km downwind of Quest circling over a lake. The
western sea breeze had reached Quest and there were no cu's to the west. As the
convergence line moved east Larry found some lift and climbed to 4,500' over
highway 27. As he headed west into the convergence he hit it over the same lake
and climbed to 5,600', This was enough to get him into Quest Air with no cu's
overhead from the lake to Quest.
