19.03.2015
93 km FAI triangle

The forecast was for blue skies and light northeast winds and that's what we had
all morning. We waited for a few cu's to show up and we saw some to the north.
The T-skew showed that it was possible for cu's to appear, but nothing like two
days ago. These were little wispies.

Larry took off at 1:35 and I was behind him at 1:40. We were let off under a
nice wispy cu to the northwest and climbed out at 270 fpm to almost 5,000'. A
good start for the day. Greg and George Adams joined us.

There were a few cu's around, little things of little substance but we headed
for the nearest ones to the west. After working some less than 200 fpm lift I
flew toward a small cu over the Green Swamp and found a bit of lift at 170 fpm
before I got to it. I took one turn and then went for the cu. Larry, Greg, and
George Adams in an ATOS stopped in the lift that I left and got up and away from
me as I came back to it.

Larry and Greg headed west south west and I headed north to get under a wispy
just north of highway 50 at the northeast corner of the swamp. A little over 200
fpm and I climbed to almost 4,000' while Larry and Greg went to much better
looking (but still thin) cu's over the swamp and found better lift.

Heading west I worked a hundred and then 150 fpm but didn't stick around in it
for long. There were wispies about and I chased them to get the lift. There were
a few more ahead. I kept going. Larry and Greg had climbed in 400 fpm to 5,600
six kilometers to my south.

Chasing a wispy further west I was down to 1,600' on the east side (upwind side)
of a small lake. A thin line of trees on the east side and a large open field
east of the trees. The lift looked like it would be there and it was, although I
had a number of other options. I took 280 fpm to 5,600'. Up high Greg and Larry
came in low under me and finally found strong lift as I headed for more clouds
and the turnpoint.

There were lots of clouds from five kilometers east of the Kokee turnpoint so it
was easy to get there and find lift along the way. Turning northeast there were
a sky full of cu's just on the north side of the course line and blue over it
and to the south. Alone I headed toward Bushnell and found 230 fpm just south of
town. I was calling the lift locations back to Greg and Larry.

Heading northeast under the clouds I came to the edge of another forest/swamp
and found 450 fpm to 6,400'. It was cold up there and I was shivering despite
four layers. Larry came in low under me as I headed out. Greg was about ten
kilometers behind.

I flew over the prisons, found a little lift and kept going under the clouds but
not finding much. Down to 2,200' I was 3 kilometers from the Baron turnpoint and
working 150 fpm. Larry radioed behind me that he had better lift and I went a
kilometer back to actually find not that much better. We climbed to 4,5000' and
headed toward the turnpoint.

All to the south along the last leg there were no cu's that we could see. I took
the turnpoint at 3,600' and headed for some nearby cu's that didn't produce.
Larry worked back up north and was able to find some better lift and get to over
4,000'. I raced back downwind (there was a 9 mph northeast flow) away from the
course line almost to the prisons to get back under the cu's and after searching
around in weak lift finally found 325 fpm to 4,100'. Larry was out in front and
Greg was just behind.

I headed southeast toward Quest Air and I heard Larry say that he was down to
1,000' and searching a few kilometers ahead of me. There was a very small and
short lived wispy every now and then, just out of reach to the southeast.

Down to under 1,400' and in the blue I felt a little lift and as there were open
fields all around I started working it. Larry was down to 700' and working to
stay up a kilometer or two away.

The lift turned on a bit and it was quite pleasant as I climbed to 3,700' at 150
fpm. It was a little after 5 o'clock and we had been in the air for 3 1/2 hours.

There were cu's now to the south toward highway 50. I headed toward them and
found lift with three vultures and the first swallow tailed kite I'd seen this
season. Back to 3,900' the wispies to the south began to disappear so I went to
the southeast toward a lone cu that actually had some vertical development.
Larry was getting up behind me very slowly and Greg was nearby.

The cu had 260 fpm lift under it and I climbed to 4,500'. I had called out my
position and rate of climb and Larry and Greg were high enough to come in way
below me and find the lift.

There were plenty of cu's now to my south and when I got to highway 50 there was
a cloud street to Quest Air. I took a bit of a climb for a safety margin which I
definitely did not need and went on final glide from 8 kilometers out.

Larry and Greg were able to climb up and get under the same street and all make
it back to Quest.
