The Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada has
announced the 2015 Canadian National Hang Gliding Championships will be hosted
by the Lumby Air Force Flying Club June 27 - July 4, 2015.
2015 marks the 9th time Lumby has been chosen as the base community for the
National Hang Gliding Championships in the past 39 years, confirming that Lumby
and area is one of the best places to fly gliders in Canada. In addition to
generally good flying conditions and multiple launch locations around the North
Okanagan, Lumby also offers a large flat landing zone at the Freedom Flight Park
that can be approached safely from any direction.
Organizer and Lumby Air Force Director since 1976, Randy Rauck says "The Lumby
and area valleys are known for generally light winds with many warm lifting
thermal pockets making it perfect for triangle racing flights that allow pilots
to return to the designated landing area most of the time." He adds, "As well,
ongoing support and friendliness from the community, local land owners and local
businesses have also been a huge contributing factor in The Lumby Air Force
being selected to host the competition." The Nationals were last held in Lumby
in 2010.
This year's event will draw Canada's best Hang Glider pilots and many other
pilots from North America and other countries around the world are also expected
to visit the area to fly or compete.
We also expect many more American pilots this year because everything in Canada
is on sale with the US $$ averaging 20% - 25% higher.
This year's very challenging week long race will have an FAI class 2 world
rating with the CIVL FAI world sport flying association and earn winners world
points towards the next Hang Gliding World Championships in Brazil in 2017.
The National competition will be the second major event in Lumby this year,
following the very popular 10th annual "Lumby Air Races", June 7th-13 2015,
which has always been held in conjunction with Lumby Days and includes both Hang
Gliders and Paragliders.
Both competitions feature exciting 25km, 50km and 100km triangles, and open
distance races. It is expected that existing world record hang glider and
paraglider flights will eventually be broken around the Lumby area during peak
flying conditions between late May and early Sept.
Pilots and sponsors are invited to contact the event organizers through
