NEPAL EARTHQUAKE RELIEF: IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT DONATIONS
from Scott Scott Hjertas Mason
Its difficult to know at the best of times where to make a donation to disaster
relief efforts. We are asked to put our trust in reputable charities or
international aid agencies in the hope that our hard earned pennies get to where
its needed most. There has been lots of rumors and reports lately of millions of
dollars of relief aid money being intercepted. There is also evidence that vital
aid supplies were being heavily taxed or held up at airports and borders
preventing it from reaching the people that so desperately need it. It is
therefore no surprise that donors may lose confidence, potentially causing funds
to eventually dry up.
I have lived and worked in Nepal for 15 years, we have a decent grasp of how the
system works, how difficult the bureaucracy can be and how complicated the
politics are. But please dont confuse the Nepali government and politicians
with the Nepali people, they are the most kind, loving and generous people on
earth and in times of crisis they will work together as one to overcome any
difficulties that come their way.
The Parahawking Project is a proud partner of Karma Flights / Cloudbase
foundation in Nepal and we couldn't be more proud of their achievements over the
last week. They were the first team to provide assistance to one of the worst
hit areas. Saving lives by providing, food, water, shelter and medical supplies
to the desperate people of the Gorkha district who have lost everything
including loved ones, their homes and in some cases, entire villages.
If youve lost confidence in making a donation to fund disaster relief in Nepal,
youre unsure how youre money will be spent or if it will end up lining the
pockets of corrupt government officials then please let me reassure you:
Firstly, The Cloudbase Foundation is a registered charity in the US, Karma
flights is a Cloudbase Foundation program to raise money for projects in Nepal.
We have strong personal ties with this organisation and have worked with them on
our vulture conservation and community projects. By making a donation to The
CloudBase Foundation, your money will go into a US based Paypal account, it will
then be transferred into the US based bank of The Cloudbase Foundation.
From there, funds are being transferred to personal bank accounts of Karma
Flights representatives in Nepal. It is then being withdrawn at ATM machines to
purchase supplies and funds for the Karma flights relief effort. Supplies are
then going straight out into the field as fast as the jeeps will take them. This
way we can ensure that funds make their way into the hands of the Karma Flights
team without any delays or bureaucracy. Since the funds are not being deposited
into a Nepal Bank, the Nepal government cannot intercept this money.
In addition, supplies are being purchased locally with cash drawn from ATM
machines, therefore there is no government tax levied on supplies or supplies
being seized or held up at border crossings or airports. Remember, Karma flights
were the first to provide relief to the Gorkha District, the epicentre of the
Earthquake. If you have donated to The Cloudbase foundation, then you have
helped save lives, period! One thing is for certain, Nepal needs us all to help
them rebuild their lives, their country. This may take months, even years. So
please keep the donations coming, you have my word it will get to where its
needed most.
