The 43rd Annual Kitty Hawk Kites Hang Gliding Spectacular graced
the dunes of Jockey's Ridge State Park from May 15-18, with nearly 50
competitors from all over the country taking part in this Outer Banks spring
tradition.
The Spectacular is the longest running hang gliding competition in the world and
is a true example of what hang gliding is all about
fun flying, good times,
and fellowship with life long friends. This year's event unquestionably held
true to form.
The weekend included three days of dune competition where the pilots engaged in
a variety of skill competitions, including navigating their gliders around
pylons before attempting to spot land in the center of various targets.
Additional skill competitions showcased the artistry and expertise of these
masterful pilots.
One very special guest pilot, who made his mark on the sport 41 years prior when
he founded Kitty Hawk Kites across the street from these very dunes, took to the
air as well. "It's just fun to get lifted off the ground and to be able to
control the glider," said John Harris. "It brings back a lot of fond memories of
flying."
After three days of battling it out on the dunes, the event shifted to the Kitty
Hawk Kites Flight Park at the Currituck County Regional Airport on Monday for
the aero towing portion of the competition, where the pilots and their gliders
are towed high into the sky to engage in duration and spot landing competitions
before returning safely to the ground. The longest flight lasted one hour and
ten minutes long, logged by Mike Pattishall.
Mixed in between the competitions were several social events that highlighted
the festive atmosphere and camaraderie that this event has generated for more
than four decades.
New York Pizza Pub hosted the annual Spectacular Film Festival on Friday
evening, featuring some of the most spectacular hang gliding video footage
you'll set your eyes on. The Woody Jones Memorial Street Dance took place on
Saturday night outside the Kitty Hawk Kites store in Nags Head and was a hit, as
local favorites, Frozen Head and the Squirrels, performed.
After the competition on Sunday, the competitors gathered for their annual
awards dinner, celebrating the accomplishments of the weekend and also the
newest inductee into the Rogallo Hall of Fame, Wills Wing executive and hang
gliding pioneer, Mike Meier. The Rogallo Foundation presents this award annually
to someone who has made important contributions to the sport of hang gliding and
low-speed flight.
