On our practice and check-in day, Saturday, August 1,
representatives from the Red Bull Air Race will be in the Big Spring airport
terminal with an Oculus Rift setup and a simulation of the Air Race (based on a
recent race in Ascot, England). It's an intense, amazing experience and you'll
want to make sure to try it out for yourself. These folks are making a special
trip out from Fort Worth to share it with us, on Saturday the 1st from 1 pm to 4
pm in the terminal (and possibly before the welcome dinner at the Dora Roberts
Center).
The Red Bull Air Race World Championship provides a platform for the worlds
fastest motorsport. A pilot enduring a flight in one of these races endures
speeds in excess of 260 mph and forces that reach ten times that of Earths
gravity. A world-wide series with eight stops (and only two in the US), the Air
Race will be returning to Dallas-Fort Worth for the second year in a row, on
September 26th and 27th at Texas Motor Speedway. This Oculus experience is
designed to be a preview of the in-person action to be seen that weekend.
Through the use of the Oculus Rift headset, you can experience visual and
auditory immersion into what a Red Bull Air Race pilot experiences during a
competitive flight. A 360 degree field of vision, paired with audio from a real
Air Race pilot will give you a realistic experience of flying in the Red Bull
Air Race, without leaving the comfort of the terminal. I think this will have a
special appeal for all of you, and it's not an experience many people get to
have.
