With the forecast for better conditions late in the afternoon we had another
late start. I got off first and immediately climbed to over 7,000' which got
folks going, but apparently conditions right after me weren't as good and there
were plenty of relites.

With an hour and twenty minutes to spend in the start cylinder I had lots of
opportunities for exploration. Just before the window opened six of us found the
best lift so far and climbed to 8,500' for the start right next to the edge of
the start cylinder and up wind of the course line. The wind was out of the
southwest at 10 mph, and the task was to the west northwest.

Outside the start cylinder we climbed to 9,600' and the race was on. I had to
work some weaker stuff low after a long glide but just before the turnpoint
found a nice cu that got me back to over 9,000' for a downwind shot at the
turnpoint.

A couple of pilots including Robin Hamilton were turning after the turnpoint in
what looked like weak lift to me so I kept going and headed up wind into a 11
mph south wind to get on the upwind side of the course line. Headed for a feed
lot and finally found 400 fpm at 800'. It took me to 9,000'.

The next thermal was weak at 6 PM and I only took it to 5,400' before looking
for better lift. Didn't find better but found zero at 600' AGL. I just hung in
there and waited for things to improve. Twenty minutes later I was back up to
5,200 and 12 km from goal.

With a reading on the Flytec 6030 of making goal with a thousand feet I headed
out. I was already downwind of the goal with the wind at 6 mph. If I had headed
straight for it (didn't see it until I was 3 km away) I would have likely made
it, but landed a kilometer short.

I have heard that seven pilots made goal. Belinda says that Larry Bunner had
five tows. That many pilots landed near the airport.

Patrick Halfhill took this photo at the airport. We had to cross the streets
continually.
