Historically in northwest Colorado the best time of the year for
hang gliding or soaring should be in June through early July. Both of those
months are the driest warm-season months during the past 120+ years for Vernal,
Utah. In contrast, the monsoonal flow (monsoon season) in this region usually
occurs from mid-July through September, though it can start a little earlier in
July and persist into October. Late June through early July tends to be the hottest time of the year for your
area, as indicated by the Vernal, Utah, climate record. Since this is the
warmest and driest time of the year for your area, you should then also
experience the best thermal lift. As for surface winds, strong high pressure often forms over the region in June
and persists for the rest of the summer over the area. This tends to keep
surface winds generally light, except during the monsoon season when significant
surface winds are generated by showers and thunderstorms that can spread out
many miles away from where the showers and thunderstorms are occurring. This summer has been an anomaly with the significant surface winds that have
been generated in your area due to tighter surface pressure gradients than
normal as the westerlies have been occasionally dropping southward into northern
Colorado. The Climate Prediction Center provides climatological outlooks for temperature
and precipitation out to about 15 months into the future. These outlooks provide
a general expectation of the likelihood for temperature and precipitation
anomalies, and are updated on a monthly basis.
