2015 Santa Cruz Flats Race - day 4
https://airtribune.com/play/1045/2d https://airtribune.com/2015scfr/blog__day_4 We got a later start as Mitch was uncertain about the wind and safety for the
tug pilots. The task had lots of turnpoints: The winds were again out of the southwest but a little less than the previous
day. There were cu's every where and we've had cu's every day this year which is
unusual. The winds were still strong at the launch but not unsafe. The start cylinder was
an entry cylinder to the northwest. Pilots were getting to 8,000' waiting
outside the start cylinder as they drifted to the northeast. The first turnpoint was at an intersection 9 km to the northwest. I didn't get
as high as others and took the second start clock getting to the Bon
intersection at 3,000'. There was a nice weak thermal there and I drifted over
no man's land slowly climbing toward the Phoenix air space. Thankfully it did
turn on and was able to get to 7,700'. There were plenty of cu's going toward the turnpoint at Eleven and I was able to
stay out of the airspace pulling out at 7,600' and heading south southeast. Unfortunately I didn't find another thermal and landed near Eleven in a shaded
area. Numerous pilots made that turnpoint and headed north to the 20 kilometer radius
turnpoint and southeast to Coolidge. There was a short final leg to the Sarita
airport. Zac landed just short. Larry and Ryan landed at the Coolidge airport.
Pedro was first at goal.
