Paragliders bouncing in the Owens
It is not on the paragliding forum as far as I can tell.
Paragliders have the exact same problem where they will hesitate
to deploy then hit the ground first. There have been two such incidents reported
at the ongoing Owens Valley Nationals.

From where we were on Flynn it was hard to say why the pilot did
not deploy his reserve or whether he attempted to do throw the rescue and it did
not work out or not but one thing was for sure and that was the wind was pretty
strong and was getting stronger. His crash seemed to be on the lee side of the
ridge. He might have been scratching too close or got into rotor. Did not hear
anybody actually seeing how it all unfolded.
The pilot that crashed way up on the northernmost edge of the ridge sustained
injury to his leg and jaw, from what I heard his friends were talking about. Two
helicopters were called in and I think he was supposed to be transferred to Reno
yesterday.
One pilot got into dusty in front of Launch and it was just sort of a miracle he
did not collapse. Never seen somebody going up so fast and so straight. It was
a scene to behold how the wing was sort of deformed and weird while he was going
up like a missile.
These are moments that you feel so lucky to be on the sold ground.
