32-year old record broken in Western Cape, South Africa.

On 17th Dec1983, Huw Williams went 203km from Porterville, South
Africa, to set the Western Cape Open Distance record for flex wing hang gliders.
This record stood for an impressive 32 years, but was finally broken on Friday,
13th November, by Dirk van Loggerenberg. Flying a Wills Wing T2 144, Dirk, who
hails from Port Elizabeth, flew 242km from Porterville, breaking both the 32
year old site and provincial record.

Instead of the usual northerly cross country routes, Dirk followed
south-easterly route from Porterville, well known to sailplane pilots, but
previously not flown in its entirety by hang gliders.

We are currently experiencing a resurgence of interest in cross country in the
Western Cape.

Earlier in the year, a Western Cape rigid wing record of 268km was posted by
Dale Lippstreu (
http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/1089048 ). The current
paragliding record of 174km was set in 2011 by Ant Allen (
http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/403671 ).

The South African hang glider distance record is around 428km
(short of the current but soon to be passed paraglider world distance record of
502 km set in South Africa).
