The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service tells ABC Action News we are
seeing the largest consistent gathering of manatees at Three Sisters Springs in
Crystal River in recent history.
More than 500 have been in the waters, brought there because of a cold front in
the Gulf of Mexico.
Manatees need to conserve their energy so they can make long journeys to find
food.
The water here for them, even though its only 72 degrees, its a warm bath for
them. Its a way for them to remain warm while the cold fronts move through,
said Ivan Vicente, visitor services specialist.
