Quest Air Cross Country
We set it up so that retrieval would be easier https://airtribune.com/questxc/info/details__info
We (John Simon, Larry Bumner, Ken Kinzie, Rob Bunner, and I) attempted to go
around the Green Swamp again on Monday even though we knew that there was a
chance of strong winds out of the south. https://airtribune.com/questxc/blog__day_1 The sky was full of cu's early unlike on Sunday, so it looked like a very strong
day. I was off first and there wasn't a nice big thermal at the south end of the
runway, but there was a sharp edged one and I did get in it. With the 10+ mph
south wind I was drifting back quickly and not getting particularly high. It took half an hour to get up over 4,000'. Larry and I struggled to get high as
John sat at cloudbase waiting for us. Finally we got out on the course line and
pushed up against the headwind. The two to three hundred fpm climb rates were just not strong enough to fit
easily against the head wind which climbed to 12 and then 16 mph. The lift was
broken and we would quickly drift back to the north in each thermal. It took us
an hour and a half to go 14 km. John had hooked up with Tom Nejames flying his ATOS from Wallaby and was
climbing south of the Seminole Glider Port. Larry and I were continuing to
struggle to the west over the edge of the Green Swamp. It took two thermals for
Larry and I to get back to 5,000' and head out over the Green Swamp toward the
field on the south end, the first landable area. Larry found some better lift behind as I pushed out in front. We both climbed
but he got a little higher behind me. I pushed south from 4,300' but there was
no lift and I finally had to shade to the east to get over some fields and to
get out in the sun. There had been a large shaded area to our south over the
Green Swamp for substantial time including the first open field to the south. The lift was weak over the first fields so I drifted back to the north to get
under some cu's and better looking (re heat producing) fields. The lift was good
and I climbed back to 5000'. Meanwhile, Tom and John were to our south and down
to 1,200' and not doing well. John was thinking about turning back as the cu's
to the west were looking ragged. Larry was struggling on the south side of the Green Swamp over shaded fields and
not finding much lift. Finally he had to land. John decided to turn back and Tom
headed back to Wallaby. It was a easy glide down wind back to Quest without having to do any turning.
John made it back and Ken went and picked up Larry. http://www.onlinecontest.org/olc-2.0/para/flightinfo.html?flightId=200100433 http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/1337298 www.xcontest.org/world/en/flights/detail:davisstraub/22.2.2016/17:08
