Decompressed yesterday after a long flight to Georgia with Davis, Greg, Cory and
Ken. All five of us made over 100 miles up past Starke, FL. Cloud streets
started at 10:30. I was ready to go by 11:30 and launched at noon into good
lift. Davis and I met up and flew the first 100 miles together before separating
at the last cloud on our course line.
I flew into the blue and stayed too far west of the Jacksonville airspace
eventually getting pinched by the Okefenokee Swamp. At the last possible lz I
found a good climb that took me over 5000' and allowed me to cross over the
southeast section of the swamp to dry landable terrain. The view was surreal
crossing the wetlands and imagining what it would be like down there in gator
country. Good thing I was high enough to not have to worry (much). I flew to Folkston and connected with the convergence line that was to the east
of me since Starke and climbed out to 6500' (still below cloudbase). It was late
in the day and there were only a few clouds remaining on route. I left following
a bald eagle and wondered why it would be so high. Certainly these majestic
birds get enjoyment out of soaring just as I do. I want to be an eagle one day. I landed 30 minutes later at 6:53 and was soon picked up by the awesome miss
Belinda Boulter who arrived with water and beer! 6:59 in the air and 180 miles!
