Drug Testing Deters High-flying Hang Glider, August 28, 1987

Rich Pfeiffer isn't afraid of running himself and his hang glider full speed off
a cliff while under the influence of cocaine. But the thought that someone might
give him a drug test and take away his national title scares the pants off him.

His story is just as frightening.

Pfeiffer, 34, is the top hang glider in the United States. Granted, hang gliding
isn't exactly a high-profile sport. But there are plenty of people who do it. It
takes a good deal of skill, and Pfeiffer's the best.

He's also an addict. And he says more than half of the world championship team
representing the United States in Austria in 1985 were cocaine users.
