Quest Air Cross Country

https://airtribune.com/questxc/blog__day_10

The wind was blowing from the south at launch at about 10-12 mph with some
gusts. This really wasn't strong compared to what we've been flying in recently
as we set out to head north. Still it was enough to discourage some from
launching until later or at all.

There was a strong overrunning around 10 AM with the sky completely full of very
low dark cu's racing to the north. The clouds gradually raised up and there were
patches of blue. This slowed us and we waited to launch later as it looked like
the lift would be weak.

The forecast was for south southwest winds when we would have preferred south
southeast or even south. The forecast meant that we would have to fight a west
component to stay away from airspaces and forests.

Good lift was forecast but the low cloud base belied that.

I was off first at 12:20 and had Russell tow me to the southwest. I held on
until 2,500' and pinned off under a cloud. The lift was weak. It averaged 85
fpm. The wind was 197 degrees at 16 mph. I climbed only 800' after finding the
light lift at 1,800'. Larry was turning due east of me over Quest at the same
rate at the same altitude. I hung on to whatever I could find.

Suddenly Larry found a better core and I went over to him. The lift improved to
109 fpm. Larry headed out at 3,300'. And I left the weak lift at 2,800'. We
headed north northwest toward a sky full of cu's.

We weren't getting high. Down to 500' AGL I was checking out the appropriate
fields and thinking that I would be landing soon. There was lift there instead
marked by wind lines on the ponds to the south of me. The lift averaged only 140
fpm but from 500' I was going stay with it.

Larry was just to my west at Grass Roots. He was not as low, but also not high
as he worked his way up slowly. Running out of lift at 2,200' I had to go
searching again to the west and down to 800' AGL over the trees at Grass Roots I
stayed with the birds and finally found better lift to 3,600' at 250 fpm.

The wind was taking me toward a large swamp and airspace near Leesburg and I had
to head west northwest between cu's to get under something that might get me
back to a safer spot and headed toward the Villages. Larry was just a few
kilometers to my west northwest as I found 150 fpm to 3,100'.

The lift was a lot smoother over 1,000' as the winds were 17 mph. I was climbing
in a 191 degree wind which was a great sign for a better wind direction further
north.

Heading northwest just south of the Florida Turnpike and parallel to it. At
2,000' I found 35 fpm. There were forested areas to the north and I was over
high tension power lines which headed north downwind. Larry was over the lines
just to my north at 2,800'.

I decided to make yet one more jump to the west to get under some cu's over the
Okahumpka service plaza. I ran upwind to get to the upwind side of the cu's but
there was no lift. Landed right next to the Turnpike.

Larry climbed out over the power lines and made his way up over the Villages.
The lift improved and the cloud base got higher. Larry was able to make it near
(or perhaps over) 100 miles to Starke.

Quite a different day than our last flight. Such slow lift and such a low
cloudbase with so much wind.
