With a west wind we were primed to not fly. The forecast was for
14 mph winds on the surface, but the actual winds were quite light and a test
flight showed the launch conditions were mild. The mentors decided that they
didn't want to fly thinking that landing conditions would be difficult at Quest
Air given the wind direction.

A major problem with west winds is that you are pushed toward the airspace 11
kilometers to the east. We had set a north south out and return task. The upper
level winds were supposed to be 15 to 24 mph. The task would require pilots to
fly upwind then drift back in the thermals. This would be quite difficult for
the pilots flying Sport 2 type gliders.

We face similar conditions tomorrow, but light winds on Saturday.
