Coming through Purgatory

Belinda writes to the Orland Sentinel:

I am co-organizer of an elite international sporting event, the
Quest Air Open Hang Gliding Nationals. We have worked hard for months to
highlight Central Florida as the delightful playground it is, and we now have
hang glider pilots representing sixteen foreign countries arriving to compete
for two weeks. But when they arrive here from Orlando International Airport, all
they can talk about is the ordeal they have gone through in Customs.

Tonight a member of the Italian national team spent 2-1/2 hours getting through
what he described as Hell. A UK competitor is still doing funny but embarrassing
impersonations of the rude people at both Passport Control and the car rental
agency, not to mention the stifling "holding tank" where a planeload of people
waited to be admitted to the packed Customs hall. Of course these visitors have
already discussed their experiences at length on Facebook for all their
worldwide friends to read. People arriving in Miami or on the West Coast say
they were not subjected to this kind of abuse.

It's clear that the world wants to come to Central Florida, but it's also clear
that Orlando is not ready to give our visitors the welcome they are led to
expect. I'm frankly ashamed - we need to do better.
