I had the opportunity to call into the Diane Rehm Show on National
Public Radio (NPR) on July 12, 2016. The guest was Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, and the topic was the
severe budget cuts affecting the National Park System. I was given a few minutes of airtime to talk about Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore, hang gliding and paragliding there for more than 30 years before its
closure, the USHPA, and our sense of loss because we are no longer allowed to
fly there. Secretary Jewell appeared to be open and sympathetic. If you listen to the
podcast, it is clear that she had only minimal awareness of Indiana Dunes, and
was not aware of the unique use of that park by hang gliders and paragliders,
and thus also not aware that we flew there for so many years and no longer can
do so. Would this be a good time for USHPA members and other readers of the Oz Report
to send in thoughtful, respectful letters to her office, pleading our case, so
that perhaps this conversation might possibly be a catalyst in our being able to
resume flying there someday? Perhaps the chances are slim
the question is, is it worth our efforts as a broad
range of Americans to follow up individually? The total is greater than the sum of the parts. Maybe, with our correspondence,
we just might be able to keep this topic from slipping off the back burner
again. https://www.doi.gov/feedback http://www.hanggliding.org/viewtopic.php?t=22863 http://www.birrendesign.com/rhgpa_sites.html#Baldy
