Safety notice to all pilots using carbon base bars.
Years ago I found the YouTube video which purports to show how to correctly
repair a carbon base bar.
I took particular attention to watch this video because it shows a Moyes carbon
base bar which I manufacture under contract.
Without going in specific detail as to why this video is wrong I am advising
everyone to ignore what is shown in this video. The person who made this video
has just a basic understanding of composites and absolutely no understanding of
how the base bar is originally made and what is required of the base bar in use.
Base bars are a tension member within the truss (A-Frame/side wires) which holds
your wings in position. It is also required to take incredible, tensile,
torsional and fatigue loads in normal use as well as the expected impact load
peaks from a bad landings.
When I first found this video I straight away sent an e-mail to the company who
it is made by and advised them to take it off YouTube and to stop offering to
repair base bars in this manner. They have obviously decided to ignore my good
advice.
It is my opinion that this repair has actually made the base bar weaker than it
was from the original damage shown.
I strongly suggest that if anyone has repaired a Moyes base bar by following the
instructions in this video, or they have a base bar repaired by this guy, they
should cut it into pieces and throw it in the rubbish. Do not fly with a base
bar repaired in this manner. Your life depends on it.
