On Saturday I set up a task for Larry Bunner to fly on a dry blue day with a
high temperature in the mid seventies of Wallaby Ranch, Dean Still and highway
33 intersection, and back to Quest. He thought that he could stretch it out to
the west to Famish, but in the air decided on the original task.

I didn't want to go with an east wind and no cu's. The thermals can be
unpleasant on such days.

On Sunday we had similar conditions with an even stronger east northeast wind,
but I setup just in case I decided to go especially since four of us would give
it a try. Always more fun to fly with others. Oleg Olsen arrived yesterday from
Norway and Rob Clarkson is here from Canada to join Larry and I.

We launched from the southwest corner and Larry was ready first reporting light
lift at 2,200' on the southeast corner of Sheets field. I joined him and indeed
the lift was very light. I spent ten minutes between 1,800' and 2,200'.

Finally heading a little bit south I found much better lift and we climbed out
to 4,500'

The lift sucked. It was turbulent. Most unpleasant. I stuck it out in hopes of
better conditions.

The next four thermals sucked. Rob, Larry and I were all thinking about going
back and landing at Quest Air. Finally I had had enough eleven kilometers
southeast of Quest and turned around and headed back.

Almost landed 4 km to the south of Quest but found lift at 1,000' and made it in
with 500'.

Rob and Larry persisted to the next thermal and then to the one after that which
was a smooth huge 700 fpm thermal. The day changed at that point and the
thermals were much friendlier. Larry and Rob made it to the intersection of 474
and highway 27, then to Famish. Larry made it back in as did Oleg.

East winds in the forecast for the next week, but cumulus clouds are also
forecast for the next two days.
