2017 Quest Air Cross Country

The wind backed off significantly despite the forecast and with high cu's that
were capped the day looked a lot better to begin with. It was enough to convince
me to give it a try with Larry Bunner, Olaf Olsen, John Simon, and Mark
Bourbonnaise. Larry got ahead of me again in the launch line. I'm going to have
to put a stop to that. The guy just will not (or can not) wait for anyone else
when he gets up first. The only time we fly together is when for some reason he
doesn't sky out at first. The lift, unlike two days ago, was friendly and powerful. Larry was soon over
6,000'. I climbed to over 5,800' and went chasing him. Not a good idea.
Fly your own flight. The lift was plentiful and great to climb in. Olaf came in under me at the Dean
Still and highway 33 intersection and we climbed out there as Larry went further
south to Fantasy of Flight. I had set my task as turning at Dean Still and going
toward Quest, but decided to head south east to Fantasy. Larry was low in weak lift west of Fantasy when I came in from the northeast to
find good lift under a cloud. He joined me there but had already taken the
turnpoint. I turned to take it then turned around to head toward Wallaby. John
Simon was behind us but finally high. Olaf was following from below. After getting to 6,500' just west of Wallaby and fighting the 9 mph head wind to
make the turnpoint I headed north again just behind Larry and over the swamps.
Found a 200-300 fpm but Larry was just ahead in 400+. Went to him but missed it
and was now lower than I would have liked over the trees. Scooted to highway 27
and had to land in a big field. Larry, John and Olaf made it back. Looks like Wednesday should be good. The east wind continues but was weak enough
today to let most of us complete a triangle task.
