I have flown my hang glider low over hundreds of dust devils in eastern
Washington, eastern Oregon, Texas, Arizona, and New South Wales, Australia. Many
times in eastern Washington, where the soil is very dusty (much more so than
these playas), I have noticed the Indian dancing dust devils with the center
dust devil surrounded by six or eight or more smaller dust devils twirling
around it. These can last for half and hour or more. Always great fun to see
these most intricate ones and, of course, they are showing me and my fellow
pilots where the lift is.
