More Quest Air December Cross Country Flying
Mitch Shipley and John Simon go north on the 5th of December:
The photo above is live.
We had Keystone as a Goal point which made our track too far to
the east and we got pinned against the Ocala forest at the end. It was 1540 with
clouds still ahead, but we would needed to have been at 5 K plus AGL to go and
elected to dive west to stay over more landable terrain. Poor planning!
After diving west at 15:40 hours only being at 3000' AGL John and I enjoyed
almost an hour of bullet proof evening glass of air. With a land fill nearby, we
got to fly with what looked like all the birds in Florida. Gaggles of 40+ birds
all over the place and many wing tip formations with bald eagles. I've got to
get the Go Pro camera going again on the glider. The other factor that kept us
from pressing on into questionable landable terrain was the huge field with a
convenience store right below us - yep, beer suck!
The land fill (Baseline Recycling Center) is a well known thermal
source with many birds, which give you a visual idea of the lift. It is just at
the northern end of a long area (a few miles) of open fields. There are open
fields to the north but many are quite small until about six miles.
