Rohan flies the South Australia Coast
Rohan Holtkamp writes:
Finally, did one of my bucket-list flights Tuesday, Bells Beach to
Apollo Bay and back. I launched at Bells, flew to Jan Juc then to Apollo Bay and
back to Jan Juc. It's a 180km coastal soaring flight that has never done before.
A mix of dune soaring, mountain soaring, thermaling, orographic cloud surfing
and standing wave lift has to be worked to complete this flight.

Orographic lift occurs when an air mass is forced from a low
elevation to a higher elevation as it moves over rising terrain. As the air mass
gains altitude it quickly cools down adiabatically, which can raise the relative
humidity to 100% and create clouds and, under the right conditions,
precipitation.
