Transmission Time Out

The #1 problem that we deal with as pilots is stuck PTT buttons.
Because we shove radios in our gear in tight pinched areas, it is not uncommon
for a radio button to get pressed, and this can completely trash the frequency
for everyone. Turns out, the smart fellas who made these radios thought about
that already. There is an option called "Time-Out Timer" or "Transmit Timeout" or similar.
This is an option that if the mic button gets depressed for too long, it times
out and stops transmitting. This allows other pilots to use the frequency, and
even more importantly for them to make a transmission stating that someone has a
stuck mic, so that everyone can check their gear and make sure everything is
okay. Because most of our transmissions are short, this setting rarely gets in the
way, and can often save an entire flying day. Here's how you use it for some
common radios I happen to know easily: Baofeng radios: Menu item #9, 'TOT' should be an adjustable value. This value is
the number of seconds before the radio will time out. Set it to something like
30sec. There's even a shortcut button on the front keypad to this option. Yaesu VX-5R: Menu item #26, 'TOT', set to 1min (lowest value) Yaesu VX-6R: Menu item #67, same as above. Yaesu FT-65, Menu item #31 Yaesu FT-70, Menu item #56 Other radios, just scroll around.
