Refugio, Texas is just north of Corpus Christi where the early
morning heating combined with the southerly/southeasterly airflow streaming from
the gulf and over the warm waters of Copano Bay creates early morning thermals
and cloud streets extending miles inland. These conditions provide an
opportunity to launch early and stick while meandering downwind flying for
hundreds of miles. The early start extends the normal flying day and potentially
provide an opportunity to achieve world record distance soaring flights.
