Corinna on the pre-Worlds
Corinna Schwiegershausen writes:
In case you wondered why I didn't fly the 3rd task of the
pre-worlds, this is the reason. I bailed out of the competition, gave it up, for
the first time in my competition flying. I didn't feel safe, didn't have fun,
and to me it wasn't a fair comp if I only wonder if I will make it to the ground
safely.
The goals of the first two tasks felt dodgy to me. I watched some of our most
accomplished pilots having really iffy landings there. When I told a safety
committee member and he asked the organizer about that, we were told to just
land in the dry river bed next to the landing. And don't put your carbon base
bar down, otherwise it will break on the stones…?
Almost two hour drives through narrow, windy roads to take offs are exhausting
even before the flying starts. Last minute preparation of launches and take off
order. The girls and the other volunteers on take off worked hard to make up for
the mess the organizer left them with.
No turnpoint or airspace maps, not even virtual ones. No shade for the pilots at
briefing areas on take off in 37°C Italian summer heat makes thorough preparation
of a flight almost impossible.
It takes a lot of work and preparation for a big comp like this. I have done it
myself. That's why I gave it a three day chance to improve. But it didn't.
I decided for myself to not compete at the worlds championship next year, even
if I might be qualified. I told CIVL officials about my decision, and left the
competition to fly and land in my favorite, fun area Greifenburg. The comp guys
visited me in the air over Greifenburg on yesterday's task.
Unfortunately they didn't pick one of the beautiful, huge fields in Austria as a
goal. Several pilots got hurt landing in goal. I am sad, but not surprised. I am
so sorry to hear about my friends in hospital, and others damaging their
gliders. In the official goal. This is a no go for any responsible competition
organizer.
I lost a lot of money and possible world ranking points quitting this
competition, but I kept my health. And I actually really enjoyed my own little
160km triangle very much yesterday. I might have been way more over my limit
than other, stronger pilots than me.
Nevertheless, I really hope that, for everyone's safety, fairness and fun
reasons, we will fly the next world championship in a different place, with a
different organizer - because I like to compete and fly with my friends from all
over the world. Like Petr says, safe, fair and with fun. But not under these
circumstances.
