Quest Air - Thursday
The winds were 10 mph out of the east and the clouds didn't appear until starting around 3 PM. We had seen the RUC/Dr. Jack forecast and were prepared for the conditions that we saw, but the winds on the ground were lighter than expected, which we appreciated.
A line of cu's formed just to the north of Quest and Rhett took me over toward them a little after 3PM. I got off below Gregg who had taken a higher tow and slowly climbed out as I drifted west downwind to 6,000'. I didn't have my gloves on as I didn't expect to get this high. Also the harness was too tight, so I couldn't zip up the whole way, so my legs were cold. I was thinking of just heading back to Quest, but I was so high. I headed east and saw Greg Dinaur up ahead and above me as I was down to 5,000'.
I headed northeast to get under the clouds while Greg was in the clear air. I climbed out quickly, put on my fingerless bicycle gloves, and headed under a whole set of cu's to the north northeast toward the intersection of highway 19 and the Florida Turnpike, our little turnpoint for the task today. It was fortunate that the only clouds around were right on a line toward the turnpike and we hadn't specified a particular spot on the Turnpike, but just a task to the Turnpike and back.
I was high, just under the cloud base and the prospect for lift ahead looked good. Half way there I stopped for a little lift and after a while looked down to find Greg and Rich Cizauskas way down below me struggling to survive and drifting downwind.
It was easy to get to the turnpoint and make it back to Quest without turning. The thermals were as smooth as could be and it was a joy to be in the air.
Greg and Rich were able to get up and make it back to Quest Air with Greg making the Turnpike. With the wind and thermals it was rough on landing for them although it had been quite smooth for me.
