Oleg on Aeros Tails

Oleg Bondarchuk <<email>> writes:

Having realized that the flex wing glider, since it has no horizontal stabilizer, unlike any other aircraft is predisposed to tumble, trying to keep the hang gliding sport at a safe side and a pleasure for both - top competitors and weekend pilots, this year Aeros, working in cooperation with Markus Eggimann (main designer) and Primoz Gricar (test pilot), with the DHV support, has designed and developed a tail for a flex wing hang glider. Although it is tested at Aeros hang gliders, it can be easily mounted and will increase safety of any other hang glider as well (in this case it may require additional tests to find out the optimal mounting angle of the tail).

After numerous flight tests and tests at the DHV vehicle it was determined that the tail greatly increase the pitch stability, allowing flying with lower sprog settings keeping DHV required pitch-up moment. Properly adjusted hang glider with the tail retains the same good handling, but the tail adds the directional stability and makes the glider pleasure to glide at higher speed in turbulent air without decrease in performance. Surprisingly enough, the glider with a tail is more comfortable to land than the tailless glider.

The tail is rigidly mounted at determined negative angle to the slightly extended keel tube. It is made of stiff light weight carbon fiber and strong enough to withstand a point loading and can be easily stored in a glider bag or in a harness bag.
