East Coast Championship - second practice day
The forecasts kept changing but the winds were supposed to be not so bad in the last forecast at 10 AM, maybe 10 mph out of the west. That's what came about, but later in the day a sea breeze came in and almost doubled the wind speeds, and made for bumpy conditions.
I set up a practice day cross wind out and return 50 km task but it was a complete failure to understand what we could do given the conditions. The lift was good at times but mostly weak, and with the strong winds it was not possible to do anything but drift downwind if you wanted to go any where. Mostly we wanted to stay at the airfield and get ready for tomorrow (with again a changing forecast for winds out of the west).
All the competitors are here and took advantage of the flying possibilities, which were pretty good given the winds. It was possible to find a thermal to drift in, but finding the next one upwind was the difficult part.
Lots of sunshine, lots of cu's, lots of good landings in the stiff breezes, and quite a few broken weaklinks out of the cart as pilots less experienced with winds didn't control their gliders as they should. The winds were right down the runway.
