Lehrer writes (page 99):

Dodge survived the fire because he was able to beat back his emotions. Once he realized that his fear had exhausted its usefulness - it told him to run, but there was no where to go - Dodge was able to resist its primal urges. Instead he turned to his conscious mind, which is uniquely capable of deliberate and creative thought. while the automatic emotions focus on the most immediate variables, the rational brain is able to expand the the list of possibilities.

On the third day of the Big Spring Nationals I broke a weaklink, so I was forced to launch with the rest of the guys. This combined with light east southeasterly winds put me in contact with my teammates. I was happy to be with them and confident. Together we worked the good lift in the ten kilometer start circle.

I ran with Zippy and Derrick to get the first start time. Running fast was the ticket and running with these two guys was the ticket. We were able to quickly separate ourselves from the rest of the pack by pushing hard.

We found good lift, but the problem was that there was a cu-nimb to our east that was getting closer (or we were getting closer to it). Zippy and Derrick were willing to get closer to it than I was and that's how they got away from me. I was feeling fear of the approaching storm and the accompanying air conditions. I kept shying away to the west.

Also if I went west it looked like there was a possibility to get around the approaching storm and gust front. It would take a long detour, but it was the only possible chance.

Soon it was too much for everyone and the task was called one hour and six minutes after we started. Fear ruled the day.
