Agenda Items for the Competition Committee/BOD
I have published four proposed agenda items (five, if you include Mike tendering his resignation) here in the Oz Report. I have done this in September because I would like to see the discussion of these items, a number of which are somewhat complex, take place in advance of the November USHPA BOD/Competition Committee/Bylaws Committee. I am well aware of the fact that it is almost impossible to pass complex items in a two or three hour meeting. The default option is to just drop the matter.
Of course, that is just fine by me when it comes to the Competition Workgroup proposals, but do we really want to have governance by exasperation?
The difficulty of the matter is that the Competition Committee members (however they are chosen) can be pressed to do too much when it is not a matter of great concern to them. That I, as someone who is pressing them to do this work, can be seen as just an irritant. They have a limited time for USHPA CC and BOD matters, and would rather that it not spill over to the time between meetings.
This is one of the reasons that I have asked that the NTSS Competition Committee be made up of competition pilots (both paraglider and hang glider) who have a special interest in the NTSS competition system. But in the meantime, I have to ask the existing committee members to make that change.
Bob Kuczewski and I are at an inherent disadvantage because we are asking for changes, and it is much easier for the BOD to just to continue with the rut that they are in. We are cast in a negative light just because we are making things difficult for BOD members who do have limited attention to apply to BOD matters. I don't have a good solution to this situation, but I just raise it to explain why things are the way they are.
Here is the latest from Bob:

Even as a Regional Director I've been having trouble getting items added to certain committees. I won't give any names, but just recently (September 4th) I requested to have an item added to a committee for discussion at the November 13th meeting. I was told that this Committee chairman would not have time to deal with it. That's over two months in advance!! In two months there isn't time to add one item to a Committee discussion? What do you think was really going on there?
