In theory, you will resist the urge to keep a white-knuckled death grip on the base of that frame, instead allowing your hands to rest softly on the bar. Gently pull the bar toward you, and the glider speeds up. Gently push it away, and the glider slows down.
Push it too forcefully and the glider gives you a firsthand lesson in the unforgiving nature of gravitational pull.
Once you're in the air, the glider tends to sail in the direction you're looking. On my first three flights, this direction was down. And not in slow motion either.
You see, landing is inevitable. Landing on one's feet, however, is not. To help improve our chances, an instructor would run alongside the glider, shouting tips.
Where have I heard this before?
