What is "true" financial hardship?

How does Mike know if this statement is true or not? Has he surveyed the
competition hang glider pilots? Has he looked at their tax returns?

I just find this statement to be remarkably ignorant. If he had some basis for
making this statement about the top hang glider pilots, then it would be less
ignorant.
